Mentor Lithuania
Mentor Lithuania was formally established in 2004 to become the first of the Mentor family Mentor to be established in the Baltic and Central Europe Region. As with all in Mentor it is a non-government not for profit organization.

Mentor Lithuania focuses on the prevention of drug misuse in its efforts to promote the health and well being of children and young people and to reduce damage to their lives.

Mentor Lithuania's drug prevention work is currently undertaken mainly through its Mentoring programme. This is a method of addressing drug misuse and crime prevention where children's communications and skills are enhanced by developing positive communications with adult 'mentors'. For young people, the mentor / mentee dialogue helps them to have a positive example, strengthens their system of values, and enables them to find solutions to relevant issues through the mentor relationship. It helps develop a key protective factor that can make drug misuse and other negative behaviours less likely and encourage healthy and positive behaviour.

In Lithuania people wishing to realise the potential of mentoring for their employees, and reflect the corporate and social responsibility of their corporation, work with Mentor Lithuania to provide mentors who are trained to undertake this role with young people in schools who join the programme.

SEB Group, was the first to bring the Mentoring programme to Lithuania, following their support of the mentoring programme of Mentor Sweden. In 2004 the biggest national commercial bank SEB Vilniaus bankas and the law firm Lideika, Petrauskas, Valiūnas ir partneriai LAWIN joined the programme. The Vičiūnai Group joined in 2005, and Mentor Lithuania is now seeking new corporate partner involvement.

Mentor Lithuania seeks to extend its range of work within the country in the years ahead. Plans for 2007 - 2009 include:
• A Lithuanian version of the Mentor website offering local input and support
• Needs assessment and prevalence studies to obtain relevant and current data to inform need and new practice in prevention
• Input to government, institutions, practitioners and policy makers to encourage development of knowledge, debate and appropriate action to combat drug abuse in the country
• A new initiative to target school children and their parents to prevent drug abuse which will be piloted and evaluated

Mentor Lithuania is currently one of eight National or Regional Mentor organizations within the Mentor Foundation (International). Mentor International was founded in 1994 and has Her Majesty The Queen of Sweden as its President. It is an international non-government not for profit organization with a focus on the prevention of drug misuse and the promotion of health and well being of young people. It has family members established in Belgium, Colombia, Germany, Sweden, UK, USA and Mentor Arabia which represents 22 countries in the Arab region. Within the Mentor family a range of programmes are undertaken, supported, evaluated and disseminated to promote effective practice and policy in the field of drug abuse prevention, provide healthy alternatives and opportunities for young people and to encourage youth protection.
