Stefan Persson was born on 4 October 1947. He is the son of Erling Persson, founder of H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB.
Stefan Persson was the managing director at H&M from 1982 to 1998 - a period of rapid growth. In 1998 he was made executive chairman of the board.
